Auditions for students interested in participating in the Garfield Jazz Ensemble(s) for the 2017-2018 school year will be as follows: New students (those who have never played in a Garfield jazz band) may select one of the dates below to audition. Just show up with your instrument and sign in. Drums, amps, and piano will be provided. Monday Aug.14th -- -- --- -- -- -- - 11:00am Tuesday Aug. 15th -- -- -- -- -- -- 11:00am Returning Jazz Ensemble members audition dates: Wednesday August 16th ……….11:00am Thursday August 17th ………..11:00am Friday August 18th ………11:00am What to expect. You will be required to: 1. Play one or two of the 12 major scales 2. Sight- read music in different styles You may also: 1. Prepare a piece of your choice to play (this is not mandatory) 2. Improvise (this is not mandatory) Drummers will be required to: 1. Play Swing and Latin styles at varied tempos 2. Sight-read All tryouts will take place in the band room at Garfield High School, located at 400 23rd Avenue in Seattle. Students should enter through the Alder Street (southeast) entrance. Please try not to wait until the last day to audition!

Please join us for an evening of wonderful jazz music as all three GHS jazz bands play at the Winter Jazz Concert. The event will be held at 7pm on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at the Quincy Jones Performing Arts Center. Bands I and II will be under the direction of Clarence Acox; band III will be under the direction of Jacob Zimmerman. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students, or $20 per family. Middle School students will be admitted free with school ID. Don't forget to stop by our sale tables in the lobby for a vietnamese sandwich, a warm drink, and delicious baked goods; as well as fabulous Garfield Jazz Merchandise! Don't miss what will certainly be a jazz evening to remember!
caje-scholarship-application-form-2017 To honor the enduring legacy of Garfield High School jazz director Clarence Acox, the Garfield Jazz Foundation established the Clarence Acox Jazz Endowment (CAJE) in 2004. CAJE has a professionally and independently managed permanent fund for Garfield Jazz students’ education and community outreach activities. One of the major uses of the fund is for scholarships to assist Garfield Jazz students with the costs of private music instruction. Assistance is based on demonstrated financial need. Interested? Come out to Winterfest at the Seattle Center Armory (formerly Centerhouse) and celebrate the season with Garfield Jazz Band #1.
